It’s usually the first question anyone asks once they’ve decided to take the plunge into caravanning or motorhoming: caravan, or motorhome? Both open up the same world of UK and European touring, but they suit quite different habits, budgets and driving preferences. Here’s an honest look at how they compare.
What’s the Actual Difference?
A caravan is a separate living space that’s towed behind your car. Once you arrive and unhitch, your car is free to use for day trips, shopping, or exploring the local area, while the caravan stays put as your base.
A motorhome combines the driving cab and living space in one vehicle. Everything travels together, which makes it easier to move between locations, but means you’re relying on the motorhome itself (or a bike, or public transport) to get around once you’ve parked up.
Do You Need a Special Licence?
This is one of the most searched questions on the subject, and the good news is the rules are more relaxed than many people expect.
Following a change to UK towing law in December 2021, most drivers with a standard Category B licence can now tow a caravan up to 3,500kg MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass) without needing to pass a separate towing test, regardless of when they passed their driving test.
If you passed your test before 1 January 1997, your licence already includes the higher B+E entitlement, allowing you to tow a combined vehicle-and-caravan weight of up to 8,250kg.
For motorhomes, a standard car licence covers vehicles up to 3,500kg MAM. Larger motorhomes above that weight need a Category C1 licence, so it’s worth checking a motorhome’s weight plate carefully if you’re considering a bigger model.
Bottom line: the vast majority of touring caravans and motorhomes on the market fall comfortably within a standard licence, so this rarely rules either option out.
Cost: Which Is Cheaper?
Generally speaking, a caravan costs less to buy than a motorhome of a similar size and specification, and insurance tends to be lower too, since you’re insuring a towed structure rather than a full vehicle with an engine.
Motorhomes typically cost more upfront, but tend to hold their value better over time, which can make a difference if you’re planning to sell or upgrade further down the line.
Buying used, whichever you choose, is one of the best ways to get into either without the steep depreciation hit that comes with driving a brand-new model off the forecourt.
Flexibility and Everyday Use
This is where the two really part ways:
Caravan advantages:
- Unhitch and use your car freely once you’ve arrived
- Generally cheaper to buy, insure and maintain
- No need to pack everything away just to nip to the shops
Motorhome advantages:
- Everything travels in one vehicle, easier for multi-stop trips
- Generally easier to drive and manoeuvre than towing
- No need to level, hitch or unhitch at every stop
If your trips tend to involve one base for a week or two, a caravan usually works well. If you like moving between several locations on the same trip, a motorhome often suits that pattern better.
Storage and Practicality
Both need somewhere to live when you’re not using them, whether that’s a driveway, a dedicated storage site, or your own garden if there’s room. Motorhomes are often slightly easier here, since there’s no separate car-and-caravan combination to store, just the one vehicle.
Caravan or Motorhome: So Which Should You Choose?
There’s genuinely no single right answer, it comes down to how you’ll actually use it:
- Choose a caravan if you value having your car free at your destination, want a lower-cost way into touring, and don’t mind the process of towing and hitching up.
- Choose a motorhome if you’re planning multi-stop trips, want the convenience of everything in one vehicle, and are happy with a higher upfront cost in exchange for that flexibility.
